c. 1817-1895. US anti-slavery campaigner.
Born a slave in Maryland, he escaped in 1838.
His autobiographical Narrative of the Life of
Frederick Douglass 1845 aroused support in
northern states for the abolition of slavery.
After the Civil War, he held several US
government posts, including minister to
Haiti.
